Zhengzhou opens five-day rail gateway to Thailand’s Map Ta Phut

21st October 2026

A new scheduled service carrying industrial goods from central China to Map Ta Phut strengthens Zhengzhou’s role in the expanding China-Laos-Thailand freight corridor.

Zhengzhou has added a direct freight link to Map Ta Phut in Thailand, widening the city’s role as a logistics hub for trade between China and south-east Asia. Zhengzhou Customs said the scheduled express service leaves Zhengzhou International Land Port, passes into Laos through the Mohan border port in Yunnan Province and reaches the Thai port city in five to six days, giving central China another route into the ASEAN market.

The launch builds on a broader pattern of expansion along the China-Laos-Thailand rail corridor. The first international freight train on that route began operating in late 2023 from Chongqing to Map Ta Phut, carrying chemical cargo and cutting the journey time by nearly 20 days compared with conventional water transport, according to the Chinese government news portal. Since then, freight operators have used the same rail corridor for a range of goods, including containerised durian shipments from Map Ta Phut to Guangzhou that reached China ahead of schedule in 2023, underscoring the route’s growing commercial value for both industrial and agricultural trade.

According to ECNS, the inaugural Zhengzhou service carried 848 metric tons of freight, including tyres, machinery parts, plywood and 480 metric tons of chemical raw materials produced by a Henan-based new materials company. The cargo is intended for chemical industries in Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor, a manufacturing zone that has been central to Bangkok’s push to deepen investment and industrial upgrading.

Zhengzhou Railway Station Customs said it used advance commodity-classification guidance, faster railway clearance procedures and pre-loading inspections to raise customs efficiency by 20 per cent. The move comes as the Zhengzhou-based China-Europe freight train network continues to expand: from January to September this year, it made 2,948 trips and moved 286,000 containers, up 30.6 per cent and 26.6 per cent respectively from the same period a year earlier, according to the data cited by ECNS. With Map Ta Phut now added, the network has 30 overseas direct destinations, 10 entry and exit ports, and links to more than 140 cities in over 40 countries.

The new route also reflects a wider competitive push among inland Chinese cities to secure faster access to south-east Asian markets. Reports in August said Zhengzhou had simultaneously added southbound and westbound container services, including an earlier China-Laos-Thailand scheduled express train carrying auto parts from SAIC’s Zhengzhou base, highlighting how factories in the region are increasingly tying production lines directly to rail freight corridors.
