COVID restrictions impact on Vietnam supply chains

Ongoing lockdown conditions in South Vietnam have caused significant delays to goods moving through Cat Lai port in Ho Chi Minh City.

According to shipping news service The Loadster (August 9, 2021), approximately 100,000 teu (twenty-foot container equivalents) have been held up at the port as containers have been delivered but not collected. This has meant far less space available for new containers arriving on site, with Saigon Newport (SNP) reported yard density at Cat Lai of around 85 per cent.

Maersk has also issued an update stating that, with some factories expected to reopen in the week ahead, container shortages could become ‘severe’. It added that shortages in the north were also ‘extremely tight’.

The report in the Loadster said the Chinese ports of Shanghai and Ningbo were among other sites also suffering from COVID-related congestion. Possible new restrictions leading to vessel delays and port closures could also cause serious issues in China, said the report.
