Global cargo theft surges

29th April 2026

International thieves are employing increasingly sophisticated tactics to target shipments from road, rail, sea and digital channels, according to a report on cargo theft.

The BSI Consulting and TT Club 2025 Cargo Theft Report details the increasing challenges to worldwide supply chain resilience during 2026 and the emerging geographical patterns of risk. It examines the commodities most at risk, and how criminal methodologies are changing in response to shifting supply chain and market conditions.

Notable findings of the report include:

·       75 per cent of global cargo theft targets trucks

·       22 per cent of incidents involve insiders

·       Brazil accounts for 22 per cent of global theft cases

·       Theft makes up to 10 per cent of incidents in the US (up from around 6 per cent the previous year)

·       Germany experiences 27 per cent of Europe’s cargo theft

·       50 per cent of thefts in Asia occur at facilities

·       There has been an 85 per cent rise in Asian piracy, and a 281 per cent increase in the Malacca Strait between Malaysia and Singapore.

The report draws on intelligence from claims data, law enforcement engagement and specialist analysis to give a global picture of cargo crime throughout 2025. You can download a free copy here.
