IND U STRY N E W S Canadian military hit by BGRS data breach The Canadian government has warned of a data breach involving BGRS and affecting military personnel. A dispatch issued on 20 October through The Maple Leaf a national online source for stories about the Canadian Armed Forces and the Department of National Defence said it became aware of an incident affecting BGRS systems on 29 September, and it had been in contact with the company to understand the nature of the incident. BGRS has now conrmed that unauthorised access was obtained to Government of Canada (GC) personnel information held by BGRS and, as such, we are providing notication of this incident, it said. Defence Team members who have a relocation le with BGRS should take precautionary measures, including: updating login credentials that may be similar to those used with BGRS; enabling multifactor authentication on accounts that are used for online transactions; and monitoring their nancial and personal online accounts for any unusual activity. We will continue to assess the outcomes of the BGRS investigation so we can provide further guidance to Defence Team members and understand the overall impact to GC personnel. Concern over rates on new contract Movers in the US have expressed concern about the rates they will be offered under the new HHG contract, with some attending a rally in Washington DC. According to US trucking publication Overdrive, owner-operator Fred Metzler organised a Walkboards to Washington rally, where trucks circled the city with banners to raise awareness of the large decrease in revenue expected to movers of military personnel when the new contract comes in. The American Trucking Associations Moving and Storage Conference a group of independent moving companies, large van lines, and industry suppliers invited Metzler and seven other owner-operators to join them in meetings on the issue with Congressional offices. The Defense Personal Property Management Office (DPMO) at US Transportation Command, and the military services personal property functions, have announced another change to the implementation timeline for the Global Household Goods Contract (GHC). Local GHC shipments packed, collected, and delivered locally had been due to begin in September, but instead began later in the year. A press release said the decision had been made after nine months of intense planning, discussion and execution, along with IT system development, testing and integration, and collaboration between DPMO, the services, and HomeSafe Alliance. Recent government testing of the integration of IT systems has found upgrades need to be made to systems before they are made available to customers. Dale Collins, of HomeSafe Alliance, told FIDI Focus: HomeSafe remains on track to begin international moves in September 2024, starting with Canada and Puerto Rico, followed by Guam, Alaska, and Hawaii. January 2025 marks the scheduled phase-in for the remainder of the world. [PICTURE: Maersk] World shipping giant cuts jobs Maersk is cutting more jobs in response to worsening conditions in the global shipping market. The Copenhagen-based shipper the worlds second largest made the announcement at the start of November as it released its thirdquarter results, which feature large decreases in profits and revenues against the previous year. Having cut 6,500 positions earlier this year, it is now cutting a further 3,500, a total reduction of its 110,000-strong global workforce of nine per cent. Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. MollerMaersk, said: Given the challenging times ahead, we accelerated several cost and cash containment measures. We are in a very uncertain trading environment, with significant further downside risk potential one that could stay with us for quite a while. He added that he expects the reduction to mark a permanent recalibration of the way the company staffs its business. The company forecasts $600m in cost savings from the job cuts.
