L IGH T E R S I D E JK Moving runs socially distanced planting event Volunteers from local companies and civic groups, plus individuals have attended JK Movings Plant-a-thon to raise money to fight food insecurity. Over two days, they planted 9,000 seedlings, which will directly produce 28,000 healthy, organic meals for families in need. This was the second such annual event, which takes place to support JK Community Farms work and kick off the growing season. It is expected to raise US$20,000 to support expansion of the farm. This year, the Plant-a-thon was run over two days instead of one, with just 10 volunteers working in a given time slot to meet CDC guidelines on social distancing. Hunger is a reality for many in the community and, because of coronavirus, food insecurity is growing exponentially, said a spokesperson. As food donations, from grocery stores to food pantries, have diminished, the farm has become a lifeline for thousands of families.
